A thin film designed to mimic butterfly wings could keep cars cooler when applied to their exterior.<\/p>\n

Morpho<\/em> butterflies have wings covered in nanostructures<\/a> that bounce and bend incoming light to produce a blue colour that is vivid and vibrant when seen from many angles. Inspired by this, Wanlin Wang<\/a> at Shenzhen University in China and his colleagues designed a thin film to act similar to energy-saving reflective paints that are already on the market, but which don\u2019t typically offer as many vibrant colours as traditional paints.<\/p>\n

Their film is a few micrometres thick and has three layers. The top layer is made from a compound of titanium, silicon and oxygen, while the two underneath it are a special frosted glass and a thin silver mirror. The glass layer has myriad tiny structures that give it a frosted look and mimic the butterfly wings.<\/p>\n

Absorbing light increases a material\u2019s temperature, so the researchers designed the layers to diffuse light to create a cooling effect. Tweaking the layers allowed them to control reflection enough to change its colour as well.<\/p>\n

Wang and his colleagues made film samples in several colours including red, green and blue then exposed them to sunlight for about 7 hours while monitoring their temperature. All the samples stayed about 2\u00b0C cooler than the air around them, but their cooling power became more evident when the researchers attached one sample to a car.<\/p>\n

\u201cA patch of film tinted with a conventional blue paint applied to a car parked under the sunlight reached a staggering 75\u00b0C, but our sample piece, when placed on the car, managed to maintain a temperature of around 42\u00b0C,\u201d says Wang.<\/p>\n

The films also kept their colour even when viewed from the side, something that Wang says is unusual for artificial nanostructures that manipulate light.<\/p>\n

Wang says he hopes the new film will eventually be used to cover electric vehicles<\/a>. \u201cThis coloured, thin film could significantly reduce the energy consumption of electric vehicle air conditioning, thereby increasing the vehicle\u2019s mileage,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
